Iranian Ambassador to China Mohammad Keshavarz-Zadeh has accused the US of hampering Iran's flood rescue efforts, calling it "an act of economic terrorism."

Keshavarz-Zadeh said in a message sent to Global Times that Iran has been taking the lead in constructing water conservancy projects to prevent floods. However, no country can fully cope with the damage brought about by a severe natural disaster, no matter how strong the country is.

He said that people of different nationalities are working together to give a helping hand to those in the flood-stricken area based on their understanding of friendship and humanitarianism. However, by implementing unilateral sanctions, "a hegemonic government" directly and indirectly hinders other nations from providing humanitarian assistance. "How shall we describe it if it is not called economic terrorism?" he asked.

Unprecedented heavy rains have caused floods in various parts of Iran over the past two weeks. To illustrate the severity of the situation in Iran, Keshavarz-Zadeh told the Global Times that 22 of the country's 31 provinces have been affected by "devastating floods," dozens of people including children have been killed and tens of thousands of houses destroyed.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi earlier blamed the US for blocking Red Crescent's accounts and hampering the delivery of humanitarian aid from other countries to flood-stricken Iranians, according to Iran's Islamic Republic News Agency.
