Police in South China's Guangdong Province say they have seized a drone and large reels of tow line of hundreds of meters long that were to be used to smuggle contraband across border between Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Shenzhen.

The suspects got away after setting up an elaborate operation on the 28th floor of an apartment building, The Beijing News reported on Sunday quoting officer Li Boshen.

On Friday police became suspicious that smugglers were using a drone after they discovered an unidentified flying object in the air. They raided the apartment and found a drone and reels of what looks like high-strength kite line. The reels were attached to an electric motor that could quickly retrieve the line and the base was anchored to a wall in the apartment with heavy metal chains.

The police believe the suspects controlled the line with the drone which was designed to deliver the other end of the line to Hong Kong some two kilometers away.

The line was strong enough to deliver 35 kilograms of contraband per trip, said Shenzhen police.

Police discovered the plan in time, saying the suspects had not managed to smuggle any goods across the border.
