Jaden Schwartz scored a hat trick and Jordan Binnington made 21 saves Sunday as the St. Louis Blues beat the San Jose Sharks 5-0 to move one win away from the NHL Stanley Cup final.

With the victory in San Jose, the Blues took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference final.

They can reach the championship series for the first time since 1970 with a home win on Tuesday.

Binnington recorded his first playoff shutout and Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and two assists for the Blues, who improved to 7-2 on the road in the playoffs with their 11th postseason win.

Martin Jones made 35 saves for the Sharks, but it wasn't enough to prevent them from dropping two straight games for the first time since they lost games three and four of the first round against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Oskar Sundqvist put St. Louis up 1-0 at 5:50 of the first period.

After being outshot 11-4 in the first, the Blues outshot San Jose 36-10 over the final two.

The pressure paid off as Schwartz made it 2-0 at 3:05 of the second when Tarasenko's shot was partially blocked by Jones - the puck falling to Schwartz who knocked it into the open net.

Tarasenko was pulled down by Brent Burns on a breakaway and converted a penalty shot at 6:53 to push the lead to 3-0.

Schwartz scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal 2:19 into the third period to make it 4-0 and completed his second hat trick of the playoffs at 16:02 on a one-timer.
