The United Nations on Wednesday confirmed that a UN expert detained since March 26 in Tunisia has been released and is at his home in Germany.

"The UN confirms that Moncef Kartas was released from detention and that he is now at his home in Berlin in Germany," said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. "We are pleased to see that Kartas has been freed and is recovering at home."

"We will continue to engage with the government of Tunisia on any outstanding matters," Dujarric added.

Kartas, a member of the Panel of Experts supporting the Libya Sanctions Committee under the UN Security Council, was reportedly investigating arms smuggling into Libya through Tunisia.

He was detained on March 26 on espionage charges, reportedly after using his Tunisian passport to enter the country. He is a German-Tunisian dual national.

Earlier in May, the spokesman called for Kartas' immediate release, saying that Kartas was on UN business and had diplomatic immunity.
