Chinese President Xi Jinping has wished children nationwide a happy International Children's Day, which falls on June 1.

Xi extended the greetings in a letter dated May 31 to primary school pupils in Macao in response to a letter they sent earlier.

"At a young age, you already know that the motherland is Macao's strong backer," Xi said. "I am so glad about it."

Xi expressed his hope that the students can pass on the fine tradition of loving the motherland and loving Macao and make contributions to Macao's development and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation when they grow up.

In their letter to Xi, pupils from the Premier School Affiliated to Hou Kong Middle School spoke of their understanding of the motherland and expressed their determination to make the motherland and Macao better when they grow up.

Established in 1932, the Hou Kong Middle School has the largest number of primary and secondary students among all schools in Macao.
