The owner of an outdoor cafe kiosk near a local primary school in Northwest China says he has helped put 50,000 cigarette butts in the trash by offering free ice cream to students who turn in 20 discarded butts.

The owner launched the clean-up activity three years ago, btime.com reported.

Students often do their homework at the outdoor tables and ask for a drink of water but they rarely have enough pocket change to buy their preferred treat, ice cream, said the owner outside his kiosk in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province.

The students are happy enough to make an effort picking up butts and the cafe owner subsidizes their sweet-tooth desires with a taste of ice cream, which adds up to a bonus: a litter free local environment.

The btime.com video shows several students exchanging  a small bag filled with dozens of butts for an ice cream cone.

The students also seem to be learning a lesson about making a contribution and appreciating their environment.

"I learned how hard cleaners work," a student says in the video.

Most netizens on social media complimented the shop owner.
