At least five people were killed and 42 others injured early Thursday after a van collided head-on with another vehicle in central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, police said.

The accident took place near Pandemurga village in Bijapur district, about 360 km south of Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh.

The victims were returning after attending a wedding ceremony in neighbouring Dantewada district.

"Early today a vehicle carrying 50 people collided head-on with another vehicle here," a police officer posted in Bijapur said. "Four people were killed on the spot and 43 others were injured. However, of the injured, later on one more succumbed in the hospital."

Police have registered a case and ordered an investigation into the accident.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

Officials say on an average over 400 deaths take place every day in India due to road accidents.
