Flash floods in Vietnam's northern Lai Chau province have killed one and swept away three other local people, including a two-year-old child, local media reported on Tuesday.

One body of the four victims has been found and local agencies are still searching for the missing, online newspaper Voice of Vietnam quoted the provincial Committee for Natural Disaster Response and Search and Rescue as saying.

The flash floods on Monday were caused by downpours, sweeping through Lai Chau's Muong Te and Nam Nhun districts, and damaging sections of some national and provincial roads.

From early January to mid-June, 23 people died or went missing in Vietnam due to natural disasters, according to the country's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

In 2018, natural disasters in the country left 224 people dead or missing, down 30 percent against 2017, and caused economic losses of 20 trillion Vietnamese dong (869.6 million U.S. dollars), said the ministry.
