A man wearing flip-flops while riding a bike-share bike on a highway in Chengdu, Southwest China's Sichuan Province told police he was planning to ride to his hometown which was 1,000 kilometers away.

The 28-year-old man, surnamed Wang, told police he is from Luoping, Southwest China's Yunnan Province and had been taken to Sichuan by people who claimed to offer him employment.

Wang couldn't find a job in the unfamiliar city, didn't have any money and was apparently homesick. When Wang found an unlocked bike owned by a bike-sharing company, he decided to ride it all the way to Yunnan.

With traffic whizzing by, highway police stopped Wang and warned him, saying that his plan was impossible and very dangerous.

Chinese netizens showed sympathy for the poor man and condemned those who had cheated him. "The man is cheated to go to a unfamiliar city, which is the key point. These swindlers should be arrested and sentenced," one netizens commented.

Others suggested Wang should find a part-time job and make enough money to get home. "He is so strong-willed that he can ride 1,000 kilometers home. Why not find a job rather than steal a bike," a netizen wrote.

The Chinese traffic law states that non-motor vehicles are not allowed to enter highways.
