Research team searches for fallen ‘meteorite’ in Jilin after relevant video goes viral

A research team began to search for a seemingly meteorite that fall in Songyuan, Northeast China's Jilin Province on Friday night after a relevant video went viral on Chinese social media.

A monitoring machine shot the video posted by China News Service from a car, which shows that the so-called meteorite, which fell in a huge blaze that briefly lit up the sky.

Early Friday morning, a meteorite fell near Songyuan, and lots of residents in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, as well as Harbin in Heilongjiang Province, and other places witnessed the firelight generated from the meteorite. The occurrence still needs further verification. 

Experts cannot tell whether it is a meteorite until more investigation is done regarding this issue. Sun Zhishen, director of the industrial development department of the Jilin Museum, speculated that the meteorite landed within 200 kilometers of Gan 'an county in Jilin and Zhaoyuan county in Heilongjiang.

Some experts speculated that the meteorite is an accidental fireball instead of meteor shower or a single meteor. The reason why it shined is because meteorites rub against the atmosphere and emit flashes of light.

In 1976, Jilin also experienced the world's largest meteor shower. The meteorite fell at that time weighing in at 1,770 kilograms, which is the largest single stone meteorite known to mankind, according to a report from guancha.cn
