Gas explosion in East China's Wuxi kills 9, injures 10

A total of nine people were killed and ten injured in an explosion caused by a gas leak in Wuxi, East China's Jiangsu Province, on Sunday morning.

The gas explosion took place in a restaurant, according to the local government, adding that the nine injured do not face life-threatening injuries. 

In the surveillance video released on Twitter-like Sina Weibo, the powerful blast destroyed cars and buildings in the street with debris of bricks and gravel flying everywhere. Pedestrians rushed to escape as heavy smoke covered the whole street. 

Fifteen people were sent to hospital and six were declared dead at the hospital after treatment. 

The search and rescue operation was over as of 17:00 on Sunday.  

The city of Wuxi drew attention on Thursday when a viaduct collapsed, causing three deaths and two injuries.
