China's National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA) issued a notice concerning fire safety awareness for cultural relics on Monday following the devastating fire at Shuri Castle in Okinawa, Japan on Thursday.

According to the notice, strengthening the fire warning and fighting system should be a major priority.

Fire is one of the major threats to cultural heritage sites, especially wooden structures. Fire prevention is a major issue in China as many traditional buildings use bricks and wood as the main building materials and flammable materials for interior decoration.

Over the last decade, NCHA has received reports of more than 150 fire-related incidents involving construction materials, including 49 fires at key national cultural relic sites, according to the notice.
