Steinway & Sons produces limited-edition pianos to celebrate Shanghai Symphony Orchestra's 140th birthday

China's Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has received a special "gift" for its 140th birthday from renowned pianomaker Steinway & Sons - a limited-edition grand piano. 

The piano is the first of 20 limited-edition pianos that Steinway & Sons has designed to commemorate the orchestra's 140th birthday, which it is celebrating this year with events including global touring concerts and a new album produced with the Deutsche Grammophon label. 

The remaining pianos will be made available for sale to the public from 2020 to 2021. 

This is the first time the pianomaker has crafted a customized instrument for a Chinese orchestra , said in an announcement on Wednesday. 

According to the orchestra, the first limited-edition piano will not only be used for performances, but will also be put on display in the music hall so members of the pulblic can give it a go. 

During its long history in Shanghai, SSO has been strongly connected with Steinway & Sons. In 1921, it purchased its first Steinway & Sons piano from Europe.This piano now resides in a museum in Shanghai. The new limited-edition piano is the orchestra's fifth from the company.
