Eleven people were arrested recently by police in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong Province, for fishing on a pier on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge without permission, Pear Video reported on Tuesday.

Surveillance footage showed fishing rods protruding from the steel boxes on the pier, exposing their illegal action.

Local authorities said that fishing seriously affects the navigability of the Qingzhou waterway, while posing danger to the bridge as well as to the anglers.

A ship owner, surnamed Huang, was detained for five days and fined 500 yuan ($75) after he illegally transported 11 anglers to the bridge in state-controlled waters.

The arrested anglers, however, were only given warnings, as they had shown a good attitude and confessed their misdeeds.

It was later confirmed that there are no abnormalities in the interior of the pier or the channel of the bridge.

"There are no waters beyond the reach of fishing maniacs," one netizen joked on China's Twitter-like social network Sina Weibo.
