A government spokesman said the claiming was based on ID cards and clothes and other characters of the deceased recognized by their relatives, but DNA tests were to be completed to have all victims' identities ascertained.

Police Tuesday disclosed the first list of 28 fatalities from east China's deadly train collision.

Among the names is Liguori Assunta, a female Italian national, and Cao Erxing, a Chinese American, according to police in the city of Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province, where the accident happened.

Cao was from the southeast Fujian Province, where the two trains were heading.

The US Embassy in China confirmed on Tuesday that Cao was one of the two American citizens who had died in the accident.

Of the 26 others, 17 were from Zhejiang, six from Fujian, one from Anhui, one from Henan and one from Tianjin, according to the police.

At least 39 people died and 192 others were injured in the accident that occurred late Saturday on a bridge near Wenzhou when bullet train D301 rear-ended D3115, which allegedly lost power after a lightning strike.

All of the 39 bodies retrieved from the crash site have been claimed by their relatives, sources with the Wenzhou government said Tuesday.

But further DNA tests will be carried out to confirm all the victims' identities, a spokesman with the government said.

Meanwhile, the family of a victim, Lin Yan, have agreed to take a compensatory payment of 500,000 yuan (about $77,500), the Wenzhou government said on Tuesday.

It is the first family that has reached a compensation deal with the local government, according to the Wenzhou government.

Lin's name was not on the fatality list made public on Tuesday.
