Dreaming of building new lives in an uncertain land, they resolutely flee their poverty-stricken yet peaceful environment at home knowing they may never see their families again. They risk their lives on often treacherous journeys, all too aware that their possible capture offers a bleak and dubious fate. Upon successfully fleeing, they are welcomed not with bouquets but with brickbats, branded "defectors" rather than "refugees."
