Three cocaine-trafficking suspects were detained and 110.8 kg of cocaine confiscated in an operation in the southern province of Ica, the Peruvian police said Sunday.

On Saturday night, the police detected a van transporting cocaine below seats at a toll station on a highway linking the Peruvian southern provinces of Ayacucho and Ica, and carried out the operation.

Three persons in the van were arrested, the police said.

The cocaine was produced at secret laboratories from 14,000 hectares of illegal coca plant in the regions of Valle de los Rios Apurimac and Ene.

Peru has more than 51,200 hectares of coca plant, but only 12,000 hectares are legal.
