Venezuelan opposition candidate Henrique Capriles Radonski, accompanied by thousands of supporters, on Sunday marched through Caracas, the national capital, towards the seat of the National Electoral Council (NEC) to file for registration of his presidential candidacy.

Sporting a jersey of Venezuela's national soccer team and a cap in the colors of the national flag, the 39-year-old attorney, set off with the supporters from Miranda Park, and reached the seat of NEC after walking a route of about 10 kilometers to register formally for entering a race to compete against the incumbent President Hugo Chavez in the presidential elections in October.

More than 5,000 police were out on duty to maintain order during the opposition's march.

Chavez's campaign team has announced that the president would register in person next Monday, the official deadline set by the National Electoral Council.
