A team of two couples, who worked together to product 1.8 tons of fake name brand chicken stock with a retail value of more than 60,000 yuan ($9,420), will serve six months and eight months behind bars, respectively, Yangpu District People's Court said Tuesday.

One of the couples, identified as Sun and Long, rented a warehouse in suburban Baoshan district in November, and recruited another couple, Zou and Huang, to help them make the unauthorized food products.

Over a five-month period, the couples produced 1,786 packs of fake Totole Chicken Powder and 24,052 bags of fake packaging; as well as 391 packets of Tianxi Chickpowder and 1,800 bags of fake packaging.

The unauthorized food items were confiscated during a raid launched by authorities to crack down on warehouses and factories suspected of unauthorized production.

The couples were charged with trademark infringement violations, which were upheld by the court Tuesday.

The couples were also each given respective fines of 6,000 yuan and 3,000 yuan for their crimes.

Given that their role in the crime was supplementary, the second couple received a lighter penalty, the court said.
