A Chinese Crested dog from Britain defeated an international group of unattractive canines to win the title of World's Ugliest Dog.

The New York Daily News reported that the former shelter dog's short snout, beady eyes and tangled snarl of white whiskers won him the title, which was won last year by Yoda, a Chinese Crested-chihuahua mix.

Mugly, who is an eight-year-old rescue dog, won the grand prize Friday at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, which is where the canine event is held every year.

Mugly outdid 28 other dogs in this year's contest. Organizers say the competing dogs were judged for what they term their "natural ugliness in both pedigree and mutt classes."

But in the end, the title of "world's ugliest" is decided by hundreds of vocal onlookers and a panel of judges

"I couldn't speak when they announced Mugly's name," said the dog's owner, Bev Nicholson. "I was shaking as much as the dog."

It's not the first time Mugly has been recognized for his unattractiveness. According to Nicholson, the dog was named Britain's ugliest dog in 2005.

The contest may be funny, but the prize is no laughing matter. Not only do the dog and the owner get a nice trophy, Mugly and Nicholson will receive $1,000, a stay at the Sheraton Petaluma, a VIP photo shoot and a year's supply of dog biscuits.
