Indonesia's electronics sales rise by 22.5% in first 5 months

The cumulative electronics sales from January to May in Indonesia grew by 22.5 percent to 10.3 trillion rupiah (some $1.1 billion) on yearly basis, the Jakarta Post quoting official said on Monday.

The growth was mainly contributed by the increasing demand for televisions fueled by the hype surrounding the Euro 2012, which ran from June 8, said Rudyanto, chairman of Electronic Marketers Club (EMC).

Televisions became the largest contributor to electronics sales in the country with 4.75 trillion rupiah (some $501.05 million) until May this year, or 46 percent of the total electronics sales. It was followed by refrigerators with 22.4 percent, or 2.33 trillion rupiah (about $245.78 million) .

The tropical climate of Indonesia makes air conditioners one of the popular electronic goods among consumers, as its sales reached Rp 1.6 trillion until May 2012, contributing 15.5 percent to overall electronics sales.

The chairman predicted that the growth of electronics sales would be sustained at the level of 20 percent in this semester compared to the same period last year.
