Police have detained two men who allegedly raped a woman at Peking University.
A woman from Wuhan, Hubei Province, reported to police alleging that she was raped in the bushes near the east gate of the university around 2 am on June 25, said the Beijing News Wednesday.
The two suspects were identified as staff working at Yiyuan cafeteria in the university.
The victim was afraid to cry for help, as she feared for her life, and she waited until the following day to report the attack to police, the report said. It is not known if the woman is a student.
An anonymous female employee from the cafeteria yesterday confirmed that two male employees had stopped working there last month, but then hung up the phone.
The cafeteria's manager had been fired already, and other employees were told not to speak about the case, the Beijing News said.
Both Haidian district police and the university refused to comment Wednesday.
However, a source close to the police confirmed with the Global Times that Haidian police had launched an investigation into the alleged rape, and had detained two suspects. Both are from Gu'an, Hebei Province, and one man is surnamed Xu, while the other is surnamed Zhao, the source, who asked for anonymity, said.
"I haven't learnt about this recent horrible thing that happened on the campus, and neither did my classmates," said a senior female student, surnamed Su, a math major.
"We truly hope it's not because our school administration locked it down for publicity reasons," she said.
"I'm very concerned about our safety in the school. We deserve to be informed and updated about this case," said Su.
