A 60-year-old American woman won 739,786 yuan ($116,146) in compensation from a local bus company after she broke her leg last year waiting for a shuttle bus to the airport, the Jing'an District People's Court announced Tuesday.
The woman, whom the court called Li Ru, sued Shanghai Airport Bus Co Ltd for $85,000 in October 2011, demanding that the company cover her medical fees, travel expenses and compensate her for the time she had to take off work after her injury, the court said in a press release.
The lawsuit was the result of a fractured thighbone Li suffered on the August 5, 2008, when she slipped on a steel sheet covered in oil near the airport bus terminal at Jing'an Temple.
A court ordered examination later found that Li had suffered restricted movement in her knee from the injury.
While in court, Li said she did not see any warning signs around the steel sheet. The bus company argued that it wasn't liable for her injury because she was not standing in the terminal's waiting area when she fell. The court ended up siding with Li, saying the company should have cleaned up the spilled oil.
