The Report on the Development of Chinese Schoolteachers 2012, jointly issued by the Social Sciences Academic Press and Beijing Normal University on July 10, pointed out that the current sex ratio of teachers in China is growing increasingly imbalanced, with over half the schoolteachers in primary and middle schools female. The report warned that the "feminization" of schoolteachers would not be good for male students' psychological growth and academic development.

@谢红子:The sexual structure of staff in elementary education has become increasingly feminine, especially in primary schools and kindergartens. There are some factors responsible for this situation, such as the belief that being a teacher is a good choice for women, the low social status of male teachers, and that teachers' salaries are not as attractive as other well-paid jobs for men. Maybe the relevant departments could give those men who want to be elementary school teachers some priority status.

@七月求不下雨的海小綿:The reasons which led to the current situation cannot be wrongly blamed on there being more female teachers than male ones in elementary schools, though that may have some impact. Overseas elementary education may also have more female teachers than male teachers, but why are foreign children are different from our children? Ultimately, it's the problem of educational system, and the way parents treat their children. For example, parents are overly focused on protecting children which will only result in our children become more and more squeamish.

@沧浪一声啸:The key point is that teaching is not a well-paid and high status job, therefore, many men prefer to take the civil service exam.

@宫城明:It's impossible to achieve the goal of equal balance of male and female teachers. The key point should be to strengthen educational reform. Elementary schools should strengthen the education of gender perception and orientation, and teachers (male or female) should use neutral attitude to lead students to free to choose their genders and gender orientation. To achieve this goal, we have to experience a change of perception and a people oriented discussion about sex and gender.
