The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary released its 7th edition this Sunday. The dictionary includes widely-used Internet words, but some popular words have failed to be included, reported CCTV.

Contemporary Chinese Internet slang, such as geili (awesome), leiren (shocking), zhainan or zhainü (a man or woman who enjoys staying home) are included.

"The words included are not only popular among young people but... are also widely used by the media at large," said Jiang Lansheng, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and president of the Lexicographical Society of China.

There are many standards when it comes to choosing new words to incorporate in the most authoritative Chinese dictionary.

"Words like juhaokan (very attractive) and chaoshuang (super amazing) are excluded, although they are very vivid," Jiang said.

Some interesting and prevalent phrases are also left out if they are thought to be used only by selected circles.

Words like shengnan (leftover men) and shengnü (leftover women) which have come to stand for a generation of young singles, were not included.

"We think they are disrespectful in some way," Jiang said.

As language is constantly evolving, some words have taken on new meaning.      

Tongzhi, which used to connote "friends", now means "homosexual," but the new definition is kept out.

"We neither support nor focus on it," said Zhang.
