Intel on Tuesday reported its second-quarter earnings with figures close to analysts' estimates.

The world's largest computer chip maker posted quarterly revenue of 13.5 billion US dollars, with net income reaching 2.8 billion dollars or 54 cents per share.

The average estimates from the Wall Street were 52 cents for earnings per share and 13.56 billion dollars for revenue.

"The second quarter was highlighted by solid execution with continued strength in the data center and multiple product introductions in Ultrabooks and smartphones," Paul Otellini, Intel 's president and chief executive officer, said in a statement.

Otellini noted that the company's growth in the third quarter will be slower than expected due to "a more challenging macroeconomic environment".

As global personal computer (PC) sales continue to stagnate, analysts have been trimming their expectations for Intel lately.

Research firm Gartner reported last week that worldwide PC shipments were down 0.1 percent from the second quarter of 2011, as more consumers in mature markets, like the United States, are shifting their purchase toward smartphones and tablets.

Last week, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Intel's chief competitor, also cut its revenue guidance for the third quarter, citing weak sales in Europe and China.
