Love at first sight?

"What if love is blind?" This is the question posed at a photography exhibition of the same name currently ongoing in the city. The exhibition, organized to raise fund for patients suffering from eye diseases and impaired vision, displays more than 40 photographic works by some 13 artists and designers from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most are emerging artists aged under 35 and have been selected by APPortfolio, a promoter of new artists and designers in Asia.

Inner feelings

"These works attempt to show how people with sight problems view the world. Many of the works show obscure images which emulate how these patients actually see the world. They also offer an insight into their inner feelings," said Keith Wong, chairman of APPortfolio.

Recognition by Felix So, a Hong Kong photographer, stands out because of its changeable image on a piece of printout paper. Visitors can see differing expressions on the face of a woman when the work is viewed from alternative distances and angles.

"The artist is pointing out the different kinds of 'recognition' that visitors will have based on their personal experiences and aesthetic standards," said Wong.

Lost? Love! by Laycee Lin is a series of works that also feature obscure images. In some pieces the letters "L" and "O" can be discerned. An introduction to the works reads: "When you see a word that starts with 'Lo,' which word do you expect to see? Lost? or Love? It's just like when you gradually become aimless or 'blind' in a relationship, and the significance of everything becomes blurred."

Singular perspectives

Zack Yue's portrait works look at the different feelings that people may experience when they are "blindly" in love, while Yasumasa Yonehara's Crazy series features photos of legs in fishnet stockings in various poses, offering an interpretation of love from a singular perspective.

The exhibition also features the works of Wing Shya, who has been the exclusive photographer and graphic designer for Wong Kar-wai, Joshua Lin, known as Taiwan's "godfather" of music videos, Felix Law, Jesse Lan and Wu Bingquan. All the profits from the exhibition will be donated to the non-profit organization Orbis International to help visually impaired people in under-developed regions around the world.
