A local man is expected to get a compensation of two million Brazilian Reais (one million US dollars) for being imprisoned wrongly in jail for almost 12 years.

A court Friday ordered the state government of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil, to pay the compensation to Vladimir Sobrosa, who had been jailed for 11 years and eight months on the charges of murder and hired killing until he was declared innocent of all charges.

Sobrosa, who sued the state government for reparations, saying due to the wrong imprisonment, he hasn't been able to take care of his son. The man, who survived several prison riots during the years, also claimed to have faced grave danger in jail.

However, the state government, arguing that the long jail term was necessary for it to fully investigate the case, plans to appeal the court's decision.

Sentence for murder in Brazil is generally from six years to 20 years in prison. It is not rare for people to remain in jail for months or years awaiting trial.
