Iran's foreign ministry spokesman welcomed on Friday Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi's proposal to form a contact group to resolve regional crises including the Syrian unrest, Press TV reported.

The group comprises Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, according to the report.

"These four countries can work as a contact group to review and follow up regional issues so that peace would be established in the region as soon as possible and tensions would ease," Ramin Mehmanparast was quoted as saying by Press TV.

According to the report, Morsi made the proposal earlier this week on the sidelines of the extraordinary summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which was held on Aug. 14-15 in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

Mehmanparast further stated that Syria is paying for its role in supporting the anti-Israeli resistance front, said Press TV.

He warned that Israel and the United States seek to overthrow the Syrian government to create a rift in the resistance front and then take on other countries that have resisted against the Zionist regime.
