Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III has signed the "Data Privacy Act of 2012" which aims to protect individual personal information gathered by the government and the private sector.
Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said Thursday that Aquino inked Republic Act No. 10173, otherwise known as the Data Privacy Act on August 15 this year.
The new law provides for the creation of the National Privacy Commission, which will monitor and ensure compliance of the country with international standards set for data protection.
Among the functions of the commission include receiving of complaints, instituting investigations, facilitating or enabling settlement of complaints through the use of alternative dispute resolution processes, adjudicate, award indemnity on matters affecting any personal information, preparing reports on disposition of complaints and resolution of any investigation it initiates, and, in cases it deems appropriate, publicize any such report.
The national government will provide the commission with an initial appropriation of 20 million pesos ($462,962).
