The city's new school bus safety regulations will take effect Friday.

The rules require local schools for the first time to get approval from the local education bureau and traffic authority to obtain their own buses.

The regulations also require all elementary schools to obtain school buses that conform with national standards before September 2013. The regulation also applies to schools for foreign expatriates and high schools.
