Turkey on Thursday called for a visit by the UN Security Council to refugee camps in Syria's neighboring countries, which are hosting a massive influx of Syrian refugees who fled the ongoing conflict in their country.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu made the appeal as he was speaking at an open meeting of the Security Council on the current humanitarian situation in Syria, which has been plunged into a political crisis since March 2011.

"A visit by the Security Council to the camps in the neighboring should be organized to see the impact and to have the first hand information about the situation," he said.

Davutoglu described the proposed visit as one of the "practical steps" which "should be taken by the United Nations in the face of the current humanitarian disaster in Syria."

The proposal needs to be discussed by the 15-nation UN body, which has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, and any visit to UN member states has to be granted by consensus among the council members.

Turkey, together with other two Syria's neighboring countries -- Jordan and Lebanon, is hosting a rapidly growing number of refugees from Syria.

"Now, the number of Syrians we accommodate is more than 80,000, " the foreign minister said. "Currently, another 10,000 Syrians are waiting just on our borders for accommodation."
