Bhutanese Prime Minister Jigme Thinley said on Friday that the world should reform the GDP- based development mode, calling for redefining the goals of sustainable development.

The Bhutanese prime minister delivered a speech at the 16th Non- Aligned Movement (NAM) summit held in Iran's capital of Tehran.

In the speech, Thinley said the world today not only suffers from various conflicts and disputes, but also faces problems such as damaging of ecosystem, drying up of natural resources, famine and disease.

He expressed hope that the world would achieve sustainable global peace, stressing that "there should be no gains based on others' suffering."

Thinley noted that the development mode based on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) would lead to unsustainable development. Over the past four decades, Bhutan has adopted a development mode based on Gross National Happiness (GNH), with the goals of achieving balanced development and promoting people's welfare, the prime minister said, adding that the kingdom is willing to share its experiences with other countries and regions.

Thinley urged NAM members to establish a comprehensive, sustainable and inclusive development mode, as well as to redefine the goals of sustainable development.

He also stressed the importance of being in harmony with nature, so as to benefit not only ourselves but also future generations.
