Peru's manufactured exports to China have skyrocketed by 387 percent in the past seven years, the country's Export Trade Society (ComexPeru) said Monday in a report.

The report said one of the engines driving the rapid growth is the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two nations that went into effect in March 2010. The FTA lifted 7,758 trade tariffs from the Peruvian-made goods entering China.

Thanks to the FTA, China became Peru's biggest importer last year, receiving 15 percent of the South American nation's total exports of manufactured goods which amounted to $375 million.

In 2009, shortly before the FTA went into effect, Peru's total exports to China grew by 71 percent, and exports of non-traditional products grew by 104 percent.

During the first six months of 2012, manufactured exports grew by 7 percent compared to the same period a year ago, which were driven by the fishing industry and agribusiness.

Agricultural products export totaled $48.7 million in 2011, with an average annual growth rate of 75 percent in the past 7 years.

In the first half of 2012, Peruvian exports of non-traditional agricultural products to China totaled $30.5 million, 12 percent more than in the same period in 2010.

Those exports include seaweed, fresh grapes, tara powder (used in food processing), shellfish, cuttlefish, squid, frozen fish, beef, liver, roe and milk.

For Peruvian producers of non-traditional fish and seafood items, the Chinese market represented 14 percent of their total exports in 2011, the report said.
