Initiated by the non-profit and non-government organization China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF) and the daily newspaper Beijing News, a fundraising hike was held in northwestern Beijing on September 8, with 1,140 participants donating 620,000 yuan ($97,960) to children in the mountainous regions of China.

The event, entitled Challenging Eight Hours, took place in the Yudushan Scenic Spot and required a donation of 600 yuan per hiker. Participants were asked to finish the route, which was either 25 kilometers or 40 kilometers depending on preference, within eight hours.

The proceeds will go to CYDF's Project Hope Happy Reading project to purchase books for students in areas in Yunnan Province in Southwest China and Ningxia Zhuang Autonomous Region, Northwest China.

A charity event inspired by the work of NGOs in Hong Kong, the organizers hope that more people will become aware of the reading project and that charity work can be carried out across different platforms.
