Greece's two main labor unions have called for a general strike against the new austerity measures on September 26, an offical from one of the unions said on Thursday.

Private sector union GSSE and the public sector ADEDY "are calling for a 24-hour general strike," a representative of the GSSE president's office told AFP.

The walkout is in protest at austerity measures about to be imposed by the Greek government to unlock a tranche of vital EU-IMF rescue loans.

Greece is currently in a race to finalise a round of cuts amounting to roughly 11.5 billion euros ($14.8 billion) which are needed if the debt-laden country is to receive about 31 billion euros from its EU-IMF bailout package.

Auditors representing the country's EU, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank creditors are currently in Athens, negotiating the austerity program with the Greek government.

The auditors' report, expected in October, will determine whether Greece will receive the money needed for its cash-starved economy.

The cuts, reported to include slashing pensions by 3.5 billion euros, health cuts worth 1.47 billion euros as well as a 517-million-euro reduction in defence spending, have already caused public outrage.

Security forces, teachers, hospital doctors and municipal staff took to the streets this week in protest at the new measures.
