The UN Security Council strongly condemned on Thursday a recent terrorist attack that occurred in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, and caused many deaths and injuries.

In a press statement issued here, the members of the Security Council expressed their deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the victims of the attack and their families, as well as the people and the government of the Republic of Yemen.

A car bomb attack targeting the motorcade of the Yemeni defense minister took place in central Sanaa on Tuesday, killing 12 people including seven bodyguards of the minister.

The minister, Mohammed Nasser Ahmed, survived the attack, but was critically injured in his chest.

"The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed," said the statement.

The Council members reiterated their determination to combat all forms of terrorism, in accordance with their responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations, according to the statement.

The Council also reminded states that they must ensure that measures taken to combat terrorism comply with all their obligations under international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law, the statement added.
