The United Arab Emirates (UAE) condemned in the strongest terms the attack on the US consulate in the Libyan port city of Benghazi which resulted in the deaths of US ambassador and three other staffers, news agency WAM reported Thursday.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called on the Libyan government to protect all diplomatic missions in the country.

According to WAM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs used the term "terrorist attack" in reference to the incident in Benghazi. Earlier media reports said the assault was staged by an angry Libyan mob protesting a US produced film portraying Prophet Mohammed as ridiculous and indecent.

Insulting the founder of Islam is regarded as the utmost offense in the Islamic world and usually forbidden by law.

The movie's trailer posted on Youtube triggered widespread outrage in the global Muslim community and violent demonstrations in countries including Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Yemen.
