MPs of Algerian Islamist party Alliance of Green Algeria (AAV) on Sunday handed a letter of protest to the US ambassador in Algiers over a controversial movie that had triggered anger across the Muslim world.

"Following the planned provocation and recurrent act targeting Muslims on the 9/11 anniversary through the release of an anti- Islam film, a group of the AAV (MPs) have met with the US ambassador and conveyed to him the voice of Algeria that denounces such offense to our religion," a statement posted on the AAV website said.

The MPs of the AAV have required to "immediately stop the release of this provocative movie on different multimedia supports and punish actors who took part in it," it said.

Meanwhile, the AAV has called upon the Algerian parliament to concretely react with parliaments of other countries through consultations "to set up religion-protecting laws and conventions on the level of international institutions."

Algerian Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci told Spanish El Pais newspaper Saturday during brief working visit to Madrid that a global action to end the blasphemy is required and necessary.

Medelci said the film "affects more than a religion," while condemning the attack against the US diplomatic mission in Libya 's Benghazi, which claimed the lives of four US diplomats including the ambassador to Libya.

Algeria has not witnessed violent protests like those in some Muslim countries, as the police managed to contain people who attempted to stage marches on Friday.
