Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Monday appointed a new governor for the northern province of Raqqa, the state-run SANA news agency said.

Hasan Saleh Jalali replaced Adnan al-Sukhni, SANA said, giving no details on the cause of the replacement.

Assad has replaced more than half of the country's 14 governors since the unrest began in March of 2011.
