"We mainly beg along subway lines 1 and 10 from 2 to 8 pm, which gives us a daily income of between 30 and 70 yuan ($4.80-$11.10)."

A male beggar aged in his 60s surnamed Wang describes how he and his wife, both originally from Central China's Henan Province, earn a living from sympathetic commuters. The couple lives in Jindingshan village in Shijingshan district, located about 400 meters from Pingguoyuan Subway Station on Line 1. The village is home to more than 100 "professional" beggars. Most beggars choose to live in the village because of its cheap rent, with a 10-square-meter room costing about 300 yuan monthly.
