The chancellor of the Polytechnic University in Mozambique, professor Lourenco de Rosario, said on Wednesday that the participants of the 10th congress should give priority to and debate over the reasons that take a lot of Mozambicans not to vote during elections.

Rosario said Frelimo, being the country's ruling party, should seek to understand why there are massive abstentions during elections and find solutions to the issue, the Mozambique News Agency AIM reported on Wednesday.

The academic recognized the party grew stronger in the last couple of years but on the other hand there has been an increase in the number of abstentions.

Rosario appreciated Frelimo's report over its performance since the last congress held in 2006 in central Zambezia province.

The current congress, which is gathering the country's main politicians in northern Pemba since Sunday, re-elected on Wednesday Armando Guebuza the incumbent chairperson of the party for five more years.
