District food safety officials are investigating a case in which about 10 students from Shanghai Aurora Vocational College suffered symptoms of food poisoning during their two weeks of mandatory military training, local media reported Thursday.

"We have taken samples of the food that the students ate that day. The results of the laboratory tests have not returned," said an official surnamed Shen from the Fengxian district office of the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration, who is in charge of the investigation.

If the lab results show that the students suffered food poisoning, then the office would take measures to punish whoever provided the food for the students during the training.

"If the authority confirms the cause of the incident, our college may take legal action against the responsible party," said a teacher surnamed Liu with the college's press office.

About 10 students were treated at a nearby hospital with an intravenous drip for symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea and fever Tuesday.

About 30 students suffered some kind of tummy trouble Monday evening, though not all had symptoms as serious as those who went to the hospital, according to a report in the Xinmin Evening News.

In total, 974 students participated in the mandatory two-week military training on September 17, which was moved on September 21 to a base in Fengxian district, Liu told the Global Times.

All of the student patients have since been discharged from the hospital and have returned to the college, Liu said.

"The college has paid for all of their medical expenses and will reimburse them for their medication," Liu added.
