US auto parts maker Johnson Controls has decided not to resume lead-related production at its Shanghai Kangqiao plant, according to a news report on Shanghai Television Station.
The factory was found to be responsible for a public health incident last September that left 49 children in surrounding compounds with high levels of lead in their blood. Local authorities asked the factory to suspend lead-related production, along with two other factories in the area.
Currently, only one lead acid battery factory in Shanghai remains permitted to operate after the local government implemented regulations that tightened environmental requirements for such factories in August.
