Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said Wednesday that he was "satisfactorily" recovering from prostate surgery he underwent earlier that day.

"Thank God, everything went well and I am recovering satisfactorily. My family and I are very grateful for all your support," said Santos through his Twitter account.

"I want to deeply thank you, to many fellow citizens who have sent me all kinds of messages. The solidarity I have felt fills me with good energy and with the help of God. I hope the doctor can issue a positive report," said the president.

Santos entered the Fundacion Santa Fe hospital in Bogota on Wednesday morning to undergo prostate surgery after he was diagnosed with a small cancerous tumor.

Before entering surgery room, Santos said he was optimistic about what would happen.

After the surgery, Felipe Gomez, who operated on Santos, said: "Santos underwent the surgery to remove a cancerous prostate tumor in a successful way and without complications."

He said no problems occurred during the surgery and that doctors did not find anything unexpected.

The doctor added that Santos can return home in three days, where he will have a three-week convalescence. Although he will not be able to travel during the three weeks, Santos will be able to carry out his responsibilities as president without any problem, sid the doctor.

Santos is being accompanied by his wife and two of his three sons, as well as some of his closest aides.

Last Monday, Santos announced he was going to undergo surgery after he was diagnosed with non-aggressive prostate cancer.
