Brazil's Supreme Electoral Court said on Friday that blackouts such as the ones which affected several Brazilian states this week will not get in the way of the municipal elections, which will take place on Sunday.

The agency which administrates the energy system announced that additional measures will be taken to minimize the chance of blackouts, which affected all states in the south, southeastern and midwestern regions on Thursday.

Any eventual blackouts will not affect the data transmission from the electronic ballots, the Electoral Court said.

The court's headquarters in Brasilia, where all votes are counted, will have teams ready to deal with any problem related to blackouts. The electronic ballots also have batteries which can be activated if there's no electricity in the voting sites.

"The ballots have batteries with a minimum autonomy of 12 hours. If there is a blackout, it will not interfere in the voting," said Electoral Court secretary Carlos Braga.

The court also assured that there will be no delay in the final results of the elections. The voting ends at 5 p.m. on Sunday local time, and by 8 p.m. the court expects 90 percent of the votes to have been counted already. By 10 p.m., the new mayors or the candidates who will advance to a second round will be known.
