China would strive to protect human rights and enhance supervision to prevent cases in which people are falsely charged or improperly sentenced, a senior official said Tuesday.

Occurrence of such cases not only undermines credibility of the judicial system, but also seriously violates the lawful rights and interests of citizens, Jiang Wei, the official in charge of the judicial system reform, said at a press conference held by the Information Office of the State Council.

Jiang said efforts would be made to prevent the obtainment of confessions through torture and the acquisition of evidence through illegal means.

Both acts have been proven to be the primary causes of wrongful prosecution and punishment, he said.

Eyewitness testimonies would be given greater attention and suspects' right to defense be safeguarded, Jiang said.

Jiang said supervision over litigation and law enforcement would be strengthened and law enforcement be further standardized.
