Chinese leaders Li Changchun and Zhou Yongkang on Wednesday gave compliments to a major ethnic solidarity campaign that started two years ago in the northwestern autonomous region of Xinjiang for its role of promoting development and stability.

Li and Zhou, both Standing Committee members of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks in separate written instructions that were read at a meeting held to summarize the campaign.

Launched by central and local authorities in June 2010, the campaign, titled "Love the Great Motherland and Create a Better Home," featured extensive efforts to communicate with local households on government policies for supporting Xinjiang's development and stability.

Li termed the campaign a fundamental program for achieving great development and long-term stability in Xinjiang, urging firm efforts to broaden and deepen the ethnic solidarity education among local people.

Zhou asked relevant authorities to draw experiences from the campaign and work harder to promote ethnic solidarity in a regular and innovative manner.

Liu Yunshan, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and head of the CPC Central Committee's Publicity Department, gave a speech at Wednesday's meeting.

Measures and resources should be used well to improve ethnic solidarity education and expand it to cover people in remote and rural areas and those from various ethnic groups in Xinjiang, according to Liu.

Also on Wednesday, Liu attended the opening ceremony of an exhibition featuring photos, graphics and a video series about the campaign.
