Jasper Tsang was re-elected the Legislative Council (LegCo) president at the fifth LegCo's first meeting on Wednesday in Hong Kong.

The 65-year-old member of the Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB) beat Civic Party leader Alan Leong by 43 votes to 27. Tsang was the LegCo president in the previous term.

Tsang said he will spare no effort to fulfill his responsibility and the LegCo will not let people down.

The 70 new councilors in the fifth LegCo took their oaths of office earlier in the morning. The new council includes 10 more members than before, making it the largest since the LegCo was founded in 1997.

The council's House Committee also held its first meeting this afternoon, with Andrew Leung elected as chairman and Ronny Tong as deputy.

Born in 1947, Tsang obtained a Master of Education at the University of Hong Kong in 1983, and once served as a member of the Executive Council in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government, a board member of Airport Authority Hong Kong and a member of the Complaints Council in Hong Kong Independent Commission Against Corruption.

The LegCo is the law-making body of the HKSAR. The fifth LegCo election started from September, 2012, with 35 elected by geographical constituencies and 35 elected by functional and occupation-based constituencies.

According to the Basic Law of the HKSAR of the People's Republic of China, the term of office of the fifth LegCo members will expire on Sept. 30, 2016.
