A teenager who killed a trainee doctor and injured three medical workers at a hospital in Harbin, Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, was sentenced to life imprisonment on Friday.

Li Mengnan, an 18-year-old man from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, was convicted of intentional homicide at the Intermediate People's Court of Harbin. As Li was only 17 years old when he committed the crime, the court reduced the punishment to a life sentence, the China News Service reported Friday.

The court also ordered Li to pay 682,000 yuan ($109,052) to the victims in compensation, from which 338,815 yuan ($54,177) should be paid to the family of the deceased Wang Hao, a 28-year-old intern from the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, said the report.

On the afternoon of March 23, Li, a patient at the hospital, stabbed four medical staff members with a knife, leaving one dead, one seriously injured and two others lightly injured, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

Li was caught by police later, when he was receiving emergency treatment at the same hospital, as he attempted to commit suicide. Harbin police said Li, who had suffered from spinal problems and tuberculosis for more than two years, had been attempting to seek revenge after doctors gave him different treatment to what he expected.

Health Minister Chen Zhu called for a severe punishment, and argued in favor of a crackdown on those who attack medical workers, according to the website of the Ministry of Health.

Li admitted his guilt during the trial on July 25. He did not appeal the court decision handed down on Friday. However, Li's lawyer Wei Liangyue said he would appeal the court decision, China Network Television reported Friday.
